|
Chardstock is one of the most westerly parishes in Dorset. Parishes in Devon are to the north and south of it, the parish of Wambrook lies to the west and Thorncombe and Hawkchurch to the east. The church of St Andrew was rebuilt on 1864 and there is the College of St Andrew adjoining. The parish registers date from the year 1590 and are considered to be in an excellent state of preservation. Chardstock was in Dorset until transferred to the county of Devon in 1896, but remains in the Diocese of Salisbury. Chardstock All Saints (in Smallridge) is a modern ecclesiastical parish and the church erected in 1845 with registers starting from that date. It was created from Chardstock and Axminster. Wambrook was a chapelry of this parish. The parish covers 5618 acres and the chief crops are wheat barley, oats and apples. The population of All Saints parish was 533 in 1871. |
